ART & DESIGN N6 Higher
 
The Course consists of two mandatory Units, and the Course assessment. Both Units are designed to provide progression to the related Units at Advanced Higher. Entry level – N5
 
The Units are:
 
Art and Design: Expressive Activity
Art and Design: Design Activity 

 
Art and Design: Expressive Activity
This Unit helps learners to develop their personal thoughts and ideas in visual form. In the Unit, learners will develop critical understanding of artists’ working practices and the social and cultural influences impacting their work. They will select stimuli and produce investigative drawings and studies. They will develop and refine their expressive ideas and art work, experimenting with and using a range of materials, techniques and/or technology in 2D and/or 3D formats in response to the stimuli.
 
Art and Design: Design Activity  
In this Unit learners will plan, research and develop creative design work in response to a design brief. They will develop their creativity, problem solving and critical thinking skills as they consider complex design opportunities, and work to resolve design issues and constraints. In the Unit, learners will develop critical understanding of designers’ working practices and the social and cultural influences impacting their work. They will develop and refine their design ideas by experimenting with and using a range of materials techniques and/or technology in 2D and/or 3D formats. 
 
Course assessment:

This will be assessed through a portfolio of art work submitted to SQA, and also a 2 hour Question Paper.

 


ART & DESIGN N7 ADVANCED HIGHER
 
At N7 Advanced Higher level, pupils have the option of selecting from two Advanced Higher courses. The choice of course should be based on a pupil’s skills, personal interests, prior attainment and plans for progression. Preferred entry level – N6 Higher.

The two courses are:
 
Advanced Higher Art and Design (Expressive)
Advanced Higher Art and Design (Design) 


Advanced Higher Art and Design (Expressive) Course:
This course consists of two mandatory Units and the Course assessment
Art and Design (Expressive): Expressive Studies:
In this Unit, learners will investigate, analyse and evaluate the work and practice of artists. They will be expected to express personal opinions on the artists’ work and practice.

Art and Design (Expressive): Expressive Enquiry:
In this Unit, evidence is required to show that, through generating a body of practical work, the learner can produce and refine visual research and development ideas for a personal creative enquiry.
Course Assessment:

This will be assessed through a portfolio of art work submitted to SQA.
 

 


Advanced Higher Art and Design (Design) Course:


This course consists of two mandatory Units and the Course assessment

Art and Design (Design): Design Studies:
In this Unit, learners will investigate, analyse and evaluate the work and practice of designers. They will be expected to express personal opinions on the designers’ work and practice.

Art and Design (Design): Design Enquiry:
In this Unit, practical evidence is required to show that by using a design brief as a stimulus, the learner can produce a variety of creative, investigative work and related market research, and refine a series of development ideas for a personally challenging design enquiry. 

Course Assessment:
This will be assessed through a portfolio of art work submitted to SQA.
