Higher Modern Languages
In S5 pupils are able to continue their language learning at Higher level in both French and Spanish. The course gives learners the opportunity of reaching a stage where the language is used independently in confident and flexible ways. The course develops communicative competence to a level of some sophistication in a range of situations.
Pupils continue to develop their skills in reading, talking, listening and writing within the four contexts of Society, Learning, Employability and Culture. In addition, Higher level pupils develop translation skills.
The topics covered include:
New family structures, social pressures and influences, lifestyle, impact of digital age, future jobs, gap year, languages in the workplace, working abroad, travel, multicultural society, stereotypes, prejudice and racism.
Assessment:
Course Assessment (final exam) consists of two Question Papers and a performance.
- Paper 1 Reading and Directed Writing
- Paper 2 Listening
- The Assignment (Writing) is a discursive essay on a topic of choice.
- The Performance is a conversation in French or Spanish. This is assessed internally and usually takes place in March.
With the study of French or Spanish at Higher, students will be in a position to continue languages at University level or to combine language studies with other areas such as law, business studies, politics, journalism, engineering or tourism. It is also highly recommended for students wishing to pursue a career in primary teaching.
