S1 Modern Languages

All pupils in S1 currently study 3 sessions of either French or Spanish per week. In order to build on prior learning our pupils continue with the modern language studied at primary school.

The focus of language learning in S1 is on developing the skills of Listening, Talking, Reading and Writing, and on broadening the pupils’ knowledge of French or Spanish culture.

Our main 3 topic areas are Self and Family, Sport and Leisure and School Life.

In S1 pupils are also introduced to the basic grammatical concepts of the language. At this stage we start to develop dictionary skills to enable pupils to work on Reading for Information texts and Reading to appreciate other cultures. It would be extremely beneficial for pupils to have their own French or Spanish dictionary at home.

Homework is issued on a regular basis. Tasks include learning vocabulary, short reading and writing activities, preparing presentations and conversations and research for cultural tasks.

Assessment: Pupils have regular vocabulary check- ups in class. In addition, all skills are assessed formally throughout the year.
